You start with 2 settlements on a variable game board with fields, pastures, hills, mountains, and forests. When it's your turn, you roll 2 dice to determine who receives resources, depending on the position of your settlements. After that, you can trade with the bank or with your fellow players. This is because you don't receive all types of resources, and you do need them to build new settlements, roads, and cities.
You can also buy development cards to perform special actions. Furthermore, a robber roams around, plundering some landscapes. Settlements and cities not only yield resources but are also worth points. Development cards, the longest continuous road, and the largest army also bring in points.
