You start with 2 settlements on a variable game board with fields, pastures, hills, mountains, and forests. When it's your turn, you roll 2 dice to determine who receives resources, depending on the position of your settlements. After that, you can trade with the bank or with your fellow players. This is because you don't receive all types of resources, and you do need them to build new settlements, roads, and cities.

You can also buy development cards to perform special actions. Furthermore, a robber roams around, plundering some landscapes. Settlements and cities not only yield resources but are also worth points. Development cards, the longest continuous road, and the largest army also bring in points. The first player to reach 10 points wins the game immediately! The Settlers of Catan is suitable for three to four players aged ten and up.

This version of The Settlers of Catan offers a variable game board and the core mechanisms that make the game so popular: trading, managing resources, and planning tactical moves. You have mutual interaction with other players, which keeps the game exciting and dynamic. The combination of resource availability, negotiation, and building settlements and cities ensures different paths to victory every time. A clever balance between luck (dice) and strategy (placement, trade, and development) makes this base game interesting for both novice and experienced players.
