In Monster, you follow Aileen 'Lee' Wuornos (Charlize Theron) in her street life, where she supports herself through street prostitution. She rents a garage from Thomas (Bruce Dern) who more or less looks out for her. From a young age, Lee has been repeatedly raped and humiliated, which has profoundly influenced her outlook on life. The result is an existence that offers little hope and in which Lee carries a great distrust towards men. Her existence gets a glimmer of hope when she meets the young teenage girl Selby (Christina Ricci) in a gay bar. A fragile friendship develops between the two, which gradually strengthens. Selby's family lives with an aunt and uncle and completely disapproves of her relationship with Lee. When you and Selby have a bowling night planned, Lee tries to score some money. She is taken by a man to a secluded spot, and there she is tied up and raped. She manages to free herself, then Lee shoots the man dead. She hides the body and continues to use his car. Lee promises herself and the naive Selby a new future, with Selby leaving her family to live with Lee. The pressure to earn money grows, but her hatred towards men who use prostitutes also grows. Soon she shoots her next client, followed by more.

Monster offers a penetrating portrait of trauma and mistrust, and shows how Lee's situation culminates in actions that determine her future. The story is clearly based on the life of Aileen Wuornos and follows her contamination by violence and abuse into a pattern of violence against clients. You see how her relationships and circumstances guide her choices, in a film that revolves around hope, loss, and the dark side of survival.
